Designers to Watch and Take Cues From Parts Six and Seven

Part Six: Martin Grant

Australian-born Martin Grant is not just an extremely talented and  noteworthy desginer, he is also a skilled artist. After rising to fame in his home country, he took a few years off to study sculpture. His desgins, therefore, are reflective of an artist. His pieces include beautiful drapings and well structured dresses.

Friday Feature : Christian Siriano RTW Fall 2010

(imagesfromnymag.com)

Ladies and gents, feast your eyes on Christian Siriano's fall ready-to-wear line.

Yes, everyone knows him for his fabulously "fierce" project runway days, but he's just gotten more fabulous as time goes on. His line is full of fun shapes, body flattering flounces, dramatic drapery, gauzy fabrics in darkened bright colors, with just the right amount of bling. And the best part ? It's all wearable in the real world, not just on the runway.

Don't forget to check out his line for Payless !

These are my favorite. I can't ever say no to animal print in any form.

I had way too much fun with this...

Like I said, way too much fun with this.

I think only I would actually wear this in real life.

Basso and Brooke....Remember Them?

I'm sure you all vividly remember the piece I did on Basso and Brooke, our very first installment in our designer watch series and if you didn't check it out, their an interesting pair! They took on London Fashion Week with a vengeance! Even though they had quite and eclectic, bright, and busy show, they turned out some fabulous pieces. Many included the tribally inspired prints and colors we either have or will learned to love (it's a definite favorite of mine). Aquas, burgundys, browns, oranges,  purples, cobalts, every color looked striking on the models without being too summery. Their attention to detail was definitely proven. In some looks, the model's shoes pick up the pattern of or have a corresponding pattern with the one featured in the dress/coat/what have you. Some even featured animal prints. I am soooooo for their looks and wish I could afford a piece or two to brighten up my wardrobe any season!

Some photos from their AW 10 Line ( numbers seven and eight are my faves)....

I hope you enjoy these looks! Jill and I can't wait to read your feedback.

Challenge

As you may or may not know, I have been blessed with the gift of a very, very trendy and fashionably crafty younger sister who is also my best friend. Today she told me that I didn't have a very well-developed or daring sense of style--that I merely know how to be critical of what I see that's wrong. I don't think it's true, but she's entitled to her opinion.

So during this transitional season, I'm going to challenge myself to come up with a few more daring or out of my comfort zone outfits, still keeping true to my classic and rather conservative sense of style.

If you have any ideas of looks that you think I should try, send them my way!

Wish me luck.

How to Survive A Stressful Morning

Ugh, Monday. Definitely not my favorite day of the week. For some reason, even if I get enough sleep Sunday night, it is a hardship to get out of bed on Monday, and I always find myself scrambling to get ready. How can you deal with such a busy morning? Follow some tried and true tips from the queen of stress herself.

1. Try and lay out your clothes the night before. Everyone says it, but I'm not sure how well it works for people seeing that I have the "luxury" of a uniform.

Oh, how I love my plaid kilt!

2. Learn to master the five minute face. A quick skincare/makeup routine will give off the look of a girl who has it all together even if you don't.

Even out your skin-tone with a tinted moisturizer. Invest in a  good concealer for under eye bags and dust a little powder over your face to lock the look in place. Apply some bronzer/blush and a bit of mascara to make you look awake. This should seriously only take five minutes or less unless you have temperamental or complicated skin like I do. If you have an extra second you can apply lipgloss or eyeliner.

3. Do your hair at night. A lot of the time, I find myself lost as far as what to do with my hair in the morning. I have learned to wash it at night to jump start the styling process. I blow dry or straighten it at night, or to achieve a cute or more put together variation on my hair's natural texture, I curl it. But not just in your "I'm about to do my entire head of hair up in rollers and it's going to hurt all night while I sleep but beauty is pain" kind of curling. Oh no. I blow dry my hair (first, I put in a spray to protect it from heat damage) and then put hot rollers in. I leave them in for approximately fifteen minutes until the rollers get cold. I am left with ridiculous, tight, crazy looking curls. Then I go to sleep. By the morning the curls are much more relaxed and I apply pomade or finishing creme to reduce flyaways. It actually turns out pretty natural looking or at least a bit more so than a curling iron.

4. Don't take a zero hour. I always thought I was a morning person until I took a zero hour. If you're high school offers early classes but you're dying from sleep deprivation (as many teens are, myself included, from overbooking themselves in activities and going crazy in pursuit of perfection) don't take them. I learned the hard way.

5. Go for portable breakfast. Eating breakfast is definitely a necessity for everyone in order to keep up energy and kick-start a day. If you're in a crunch and just can't find time, try granola bars, oatmeal bars, cereal bars, a bagel, basically anything portable that can be eaten as you walk out the door, as long as it's healthy. Let's get real--a sugar crash is definitely not going to de-stress your morning.

Yum!

6. Keep a schedule. I believe the key to de-stressing is having and sticking to a set routine and a schedule. I've saved myself from countless breakdowns this way. A set schedule keeps me on task throughout the morning and entire day so that I never miss an activity or forget an event.

A planner like this one is a great place to keep your schedule.

Good luck and I hope some of these tips prove helpful in de-stressing your morning routines!

Friday Feature

With the end of fashion week being yesterday, it is time to resume our regular schedule here at Frock it Out. Part of resuming is continuing in our Friday feature, which is exactly what I intend to do today.

But first, I would like to let everyone know that we have a winner for the Turn My Swag On fashion week contest. The lucky girl will be notified via follower e-mail. Congratulations are due to all of those who participated! Though the contest is over, I encourage you to continue providing us with feedback and comments on all of these looks!

So now for our Friday Feature....

I really really love this dress that I saw at Forever 21 the other day. It's going to be great for spring, with the yellow blue and white, but lately, I've just  been partial to the color blue. Please take note that Forever 21's dresses are super short, so take care when deciding what you would wear something like this to. I also love that it's belted to emphasize a waist, because getting back into spring means shedding all of the heavy winter garb and showing off your curves.

Some other dresses I've seen and liked are:

I love gray! (So do the designers and editors, it's been all over the runways!)

I love this peculiar and somewhat floraly print. This would be cute with tights too, especially if you're thinking it's too short.

Another supercute and flattering frock is this navy one. I love that it has pockets. So chic!

Tell us what you think! Do you know a flattering dress shape? Or is there something you want us to feature? Let us know!

Have a great weekend!

xoxo Elise

On the Seventh Day of Fashion Week...

The fashion gods gave to me...

Vera Wang !

More black and grey and dark colors and sparkles. Right up my alley.

This season, Vera's line is a lot of structure contrasted with some smooth draping. The gauzy fabrics used on some of the skirts of her line also give it an ethereal feel, but the layering of them give it a definite edge. Also, the asymmetrical lines in her pieces are extremely flattering and make the garments more interesting over all. There is also some interesting textural choices. All of these looks are brought together by the makeup and the hair that really complete the look. Without these two components, some of these looks may not look as edgy.

Mostly, I'm just glad someone is doing fabulous big hair and a really defined, pretty eye and not something too off the wall.

On the Sixth Day of Fashion Week

On the sixth day of fashion week the industry gave me a Marc Jacobs line that's dreamy!

I am wholeheartedly in love with Marc Jacobs. I am also greatly in love with the movie the The Wizard of Oz. The connection? At last night's Marc Jacobs show (did you see it? It was enitrely genius and fabulous in the simplest and best way possible.) the models strutted their stuff down the runway to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," my favourite song from the movie. It was just oozing things I love. The line was fairly simple, but the clothes were gorgeous. Also, the models' natural looks gave all the more attention to the clothing.

Plus, for those of you wondering how to create a successful seating chart for all of those who are dying to be in the front row, but still separating those who must be separated, take notes! Jacobs had a box frame type structure at the front with all of the models inside. The floor was divided into multiple runways through which the models would weave which also means multiple front rows. Genuis, again!

The show was stunning overall, and here are some photos:

All of these looks are charming in their own ways. I especially love the whimsy and flowiness of the first two looks and the chic shades of gray and well cut pieces that make up the remainder of the collection.

Another line and designer that I adore is Zac Posen. Here are a few looks from his show (photos):

He definitely brings in the traditional fall colors in this line, much different than the gray and black hues that have been popping up in many looks. Notice the burgundys, browns, burnt siennas, flecks of gold, etc. Of all of the looks though, I love love love the first and the last. In the first, I love the chic simplicity of the traditional black and gray. In the last, I think that the pairing of the brown, pumpkin-pie orange, and burnt sienna make for a stunning fall ensemble.

What do you think? Which look is your favorite? When answering, give the initials of the designer with the number of the look, number one being the top, and ten or eleven the last look.
